Accumulation and fractionation of rare earth elements in atmospheric particulates around a mine tailing in Baotou, China

چکیده
Rare earth elements (REEs) have been increasingly emitted into the 8 atmosphere with a worldwide increase in use of these metals. However, the research 9 on REEs in atmospheric particulates is fairly limited. In this paper, atmospheric 10 particulates including total suspended particulate (TSP) matter and particles with an 11 equivalent aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm (PM10) were collected around a rare 12 earth mine tailing in Baotou, the largest rare earth industrial base in China, in August 13 2012 and March 2013, for the analyses of REE levels and distributions. The total 14 concentrations of REEs for TSP were 172.91 and 297.49 ng/m, and those for PM10 15 were 63.23 and 105.52 ng/m, in August 2012 and March 2013, respectively. 16 Enrichment factors for all 14 analyzed REEs in the TSP and PM10 indicated that the 17 REE enrichment in atmosphere particulates was caused by anthropogenic sources and 18 influenced by the strong wind in spring season. The spatial distribution of REEs in 19 TSP showed a strong gradient in the prevailing wind direction. The 20 chondrite-normalized patterns of REEs in TSP and PM10 were similar with the 21 conspicuous fractionation between light REEs and heavy REEs. 22

Geochemical fractions of rare earth elements in soil around a mine tailing in Baotou, China
Rare earth mine tailing dumps are environmental hazards because tailing easily leaches and erodes by water and wind. To assess the influence of mine tailing on the geochemical behavior of rare earth elements (REEs) in soil, sixty-seven surface soil samples and three soil profile samples were collected from different locations near China's largest rare earth mine tailing. The total concentration...
متن کاملBio-accumulation of major, trace, and rare earth elements by two Astragalus species grown on Agh-Dareh and Zarshouran gold deposits, Takab, NW Iran
The Agh-Dareh and Zarshouran mines are two known active gold deposits in Takab, NW Iran. In the present study, the potentials of two species of Astragalus (A. microcephalus from Agh-Dareh and A. effusus from Zarshouran mines), as the dominant plants grown in these areas, were assessed for the bio-accumulation of the major, trace, and rare earth elements (REEs). The plant and soil samples were c...

This research presents data on widespread abnormal accumulations of Trace and Rare Earth Elements in many coal deposits worldwide. There have been many studies on the distribution and geochemistry of REEs in coal. ∑REE content in most coals varies from several µg/g to several hundred µg/g, and the REEs are distributed in minerals although some are associated with organic material in coal. In th...
متن کاملRadionuclide concentrations and excess lifetime cancer risk due to gamma radioactivity in tailing enriched soil around Maiganga coal mine, Northeast Nigeria
Background: Human activities such as mining enhance the radioactivity levels above normal background which can lead to an incremental increase in the radiation risk to the population. Materials and Methods: 20 tailing enriched soil samples collected around Maiganga coal mine, Gombe, Northeast Nigeria were assessed for their 226Ra, 232Th and 40K contents using HPGe gamma-ray detector. Results: T...
